YOUR EXERCISE CLASSES CARE TEAM

Well Over 40 Exercise Studio

Fizzio for Life is now powering Well Over 40, our new exercise studio conveniently located next to our Waterford West Practice.  Well Over 40 specialises in prescribing exercises for those over 40 years old, or those that are uncomfortable in a traditional gym setting.  We have a wide range of small and large group classes especially designed to provide functional movement and strength so that you can enjoy a high quality of life and keep doing the things that you love as you age.

Our classes are designed, run and 100% supervised by university qualified professionals who are the right professionals to help you begin or continue your progression to good health and improve your functional movement.  You are an individual, and your movement needs are unique to you, so we run small group classes where each person works to their individual program.  Because of this, all participants in small group classes do need to have an appointment with our EP prior to commencing to discuss which class might be appropriate and to design a program.

LARGE GROUP CLASSES

Start Moving Well:

Are you losing strength in your body because you have been inactive due to illness or injury, or just because ‘exercise’ scares you off? This class is designed to re-introduce you to movement - something your body is designed to do, and as an added bonus - it’s fun!

What kind of exercises will I do? Fun ones! This is a gentle exercise class that goes for 50 minutes. The class is mainly conducted on a seat. The exercises included a range of movement exercises and some gentle cardio and resistance exercises. You may use therabands, balls, small weights and other items during this class, depending on your ability. There may be up to 10 participants in this class. You do not need an individual assessment prior to commencing this class, but please let us know if you have any significant health issues.

Is this class suitable for me? People new to exercise or who haven't exercised for a while, people with mobility and balance issues, people recovering from heart attack, gastric band surgery or other health or surgical issues. There may be up to 10 people in this group.

The 'Moving better but not quite like Jagger' Hour:

Those of you that participate in the ‘Moving Better’ group may have already started some gentle exercising or doing walking programs. You may be ready to transition from the ‘Start moving well’ class or a heart program and be looking to step it up a little.

What kind of exercises will I do?  This exercise class is a progression from the gentle exercise class and also goes for 50 minutes.  Only some of the exercises may be conducted on a seat. The movements are faster, and the cardio and resistance exercises are performed at a harder level. There may be up to 10 participants in this class and participants will mostly perform similar exercises depending on ability.  *Note, we do not guarantee that you will be able to move like Jagger if you participate in this class!

Is this class suitable for me? If you have been attending the gentle exercise class for a while, or if you had a reasonable degree of activity before your illness or surgery, you may be quite comfortable starting at this level.  There may be up to 10 people in this group.

Balance Well:

Being unsteady on your feet is dangerous when we age, however, it's never to late to do something about it.   This class is suitable for people that have lost confidence in their ability to stand and walk comfortably and safely.  You may be living alone and worried about a fall, or you might need some help to be more mobile around the house.  Plus studies have shown that the most important test that indicates longevity of life is the ability to get down to the ground and back up again.

What kind of exercises will I do?  You will do a variety of exercises, some seated, some standing, aimed at strengthening the large muscle groups that help you stand up, walk and balance.  You will learn how to get down to the ground safely and how to get back up if you fall.

Is this class suitable for me?  Yes.  If you can't get up from your seat without grabbing on to something, or if you delay getting up to go to the bathroom because you don't want to move, or if you are scared of living alone ad fallilng then you absolutely can and should take this class.

SMALL GROUP CLASSES

HIIT Well:

High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) has been shown to have a very positive effect on heart health, muscle mass and physiology. The variety and speed of the exercises mean that you won’t get bored, but also that it takes a shorter time to get results. This class is 45 mins, including warm up and warm down.

What kind of exercises will I do? The exercises are numerous and varied. Interval training is done in sets of exercises, with short bursts of intense exercise, followed by a short rest. The exercises might involve cycling, dumbbells, skipping, or body weight movements - all done to your own capability.

Is this class suitable for me? All exercises are age-appropriate and modified to suit your individual capability based on your assessment by our exercise physiologists, so it really is suitable for anyone that wants to give it a go!  This is one of our most popular classes as it gives great results and will have you feeling strong in no time at all. There is a maximum of 5 people in this group.

Travel Well:

This is a class we are very excited about.  Most of us dream of travel, but sometimes our body lets us down.  Travelling in the plane is hard on our backs, we have to lug suitcases around, there's endless steps and uneven ground to traverse, or you may be a Grey Nomad - hitching up vans, packing and unpacking your chairs and other gear, putting up awnings and getting down boats.  Either way, travel takes a toll on our bodies, and if we are unprepared it could lead to injury.  Our class is designed to prepare you for your trip of a lifetime.  You'll be forming a comunity of like-minded travellers in this course as well.  It is optimal that you start this class at least 12 weeks before your trip, but starting at anytime will also have benefits.

What kind of exercises will I do? The exercises are numerous and varied. There is agility, strengthening, practising lifting and loading, and balance combined.  All the movements are designed to mimic situations you will face during your trip.

Is this class suitable for me? You will need to have an individual  or couple session with the exercise physiologist before starting this class so that we can determine your individual program to suit what you are trying to achieve.  This class is a little bit larger - a maximum of 8 - to allow for any couples that want to attend.

Empower Hour - Ladies only:

It's empowerment time for all the women out there that have given up on movement and exercise! This small class is for women only because women face a unique set of health issues as we age including the risk of osteoporosis, heart attacks, strokes and other serious conditions. Plus we always put ourselves last! It's time to empower yourself to feel differently about your body, and prepare it to escort you through the next few decades of your life in a safe and supportive environment.

What kind of exercises will I do? The exercises in these classes vary depending on the participants in each session. You may do some circuit work involving wall push ups, step ups, dumbbells, other resistance training, and walking. There is a maximum of five participants in this class. You are closely supervised and your program adapted according to your capability. And did I mention - age appropriate music? It’s Hammertime….

Is this class suitable for me?  If you are a woman, yes.  You will need to be assessed individually by the exercise physiologist or physiotherapist before starting in the small group classes.  This ensures you are placed at a safe and appropriate level for you. There is a maximum of five participants in this class.

The Manpower Hour - Men only:

Men don't miss out!   Men also face a unique set of health challenges, high blood pressure, metabolic syndrome and diabetes, depression and heart problems.  There is a host of evidence showing the positive impacts that exercise has for men across a whole range of health issues. Plus, we are building communities here - you will be exercising with men in your age group, facing similar challenges and health issues.

What kind of exercises will I do? The exercises in this class will vary depending on the participants in each session. You may be doing a combination of lifting, HIIT, or some cardio work.   There is a maximum of five participants in this class. You are closely supervised and your program adapted according to your capability.

Is this class suitable for me?  If you are a man, yes.  You will need to be assessed individually by the exercise physiologist or physiotherapist before starting in the small group classes.  This ensures you are placed at a safe and appropriate level for you. There is a maximum of five participants in this class.

The 'So Strong I'm Dangerous' Hour of Power:

Do you want to be able to keep up with the grandkids or your teenagers? Pick them up, swing them around without worrying that you are going to break yourself in the process? Do you want to beat your mates at bowls, but the legs are ‘getting a bit weak at the knees’? Then you need your muscles to work!

What kind of exercises will I do?  The exercises in these classes are mainly resistance exercises using a variety of weights, dumbbells, pulleys and bands.  The focus is on the development of core muscle groups that help to maintain a strong body and improve functional movement.

Is this class suitable for me?  You will need to be assessed individually by the exercise physiologist or physiotherapist before starting in the small group classes.  This ensures you are placed at a safe and appropriate level for you. There is a maximum of five participants in this class.

A Fish Called Wanda Hydrotherapy Class:

What kind of exercises will I do? The pool is a great place to perform exercises particularly if you are struggling with joint pain or painful movements. You might do simple walking or stepping exercises, or some resistance work with your arms and legs as they gradually get used to movement following surgery or injury.

Is this class suitable for me?  You will need to be assessed individually by the exercise physiologist or physiotherapist before starting in the small group classes.  This ensures that you are competent in the water and that you can participate safely in the class. There is more information on our dedicated Hydrotherapy page.  There are a maximum of 4 people in the group.  Pool entry is not included in the cost of this class.

FIZZIO FOR LIFE CLASSES

Pregnancy and New Mums:

This small group class is run by Fizzio for Life, and your instructor is Julie, our senior Women's Health physiotherapist.

What kind of exercises will I do?  The exercises in this class are designed to prepare or repair your body before and after birth.  There is a strong pelvic floor component, but also musculoskeletal exercises and stretches for back and hip pain.  Julie is a Level 4 DMA Pilates trained clinician, so her class may incorporate some elements of Pilates.   The exercises can be modified for your individual requirements and limitations.

Is this class suitable for me?  This class is suitable for various stages of pregnancy and post-natal care.  You do need to book an initial consult with Julie so that she can design your program based on your individual needs.

Clinical Pilates:

This small group class is run by Fizzio for Life, and your instructor is a physiotherapist.

What kind of exercises will I do?  The clinical pilates class is mainly performed on mats.  There may be some reformer or Pilates chair component, depending on your level.  The exercises can be modified for your individual requirements and limitations.  You are fully supervised by a university trained exercise physiologist or a physiotherapist.  You may use a variety of stretching bands, pilates rings and other equipment.

Is this class suitable for me?  As this is a mat based class you need to be capable of getting up and down from the floor.  You will need to be assessed individually by the exercise physiologist or physiotherapist before starting in the small group classes.  This ensures you are placed at a safe and appropriate level for you.  There is more information on our dedicated Clinical Pilates page.
